The Mahabharata is one of the biggest epics in Hinduism that contains stories about gods, humans, demons. The story is divided into eighteen parvas or parts. The first verse of this epic was composed by Vyasa the son of Parasara approximately 1000 years ago. Another tradition has it that Bhisma recited this to Vishnu at night during their exile in the forest previously known as Dandaka forest nearmodern-day Sravana Belgola where they were put into a deep sleep after trying to kill their father Yama lord of death during their battle with him. The Mahabharata had more significance and deeper meaning than the Ramayana and it shows the importance of masculinity and valor. This is seen in many ways through characters such as Bhima, Arjuna, Karna, Ashwatthama etc. The Mahabharata epic is considered as a pure piece of work that is free from the changing times which is why it has been kept alive by people over thousands of years through oral tradition. The epic contains many prayers and hymns to Hindu gods and goddesses which can be found in ancient Vedic literature. The epic describes one of the greatest battles in history, the battle between the Pandavas and Kauravas. The main characters of this epic are: The story starts with a 12-year famine in a kingdom called Kuru. The rajah Dhritarashtra was advised by his priest Vyasa to have a long sleep for 100 years so that he does not have to suffer from his son's anger at him for his lack of virtue. In due course of time, Dhritrashtra dies and Pandu, his son becomes rajah. Pandu had two sons from Diti, Kunti who goes on to become Vyasa's wife. She is also the mother of Yudhishthira, Nakula and Sahadeva. Pandu goes on to have five children from Madri with Kunti's blessings. These children are called the Pandavas. The story then goes on to explain that one day when Pandu was out hunting, he meets a sage with whom he has an interesting conversation about life and death. The sage tells him that it is more important what you do while alive than what happens when you die. He also tells him his soul will be sent to heaven if he dies while performing his duties as a king. Pandu feels inspired by this conversation and goes home to his palace. He tells Madri he wants to have five children with her. On the last night of the year, Kunti comes to him and asks him what he would like as a gift for the end of the year. Pandu asks Kunti for children because he feels lonely living in a palace without any. This is how Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva are born. Years later, Pandu marries Madri and they have two sons Karna and Ashwatthama through divine intervention because Pandu can no longer procreate . cfa1e77820
